News Release:

What: SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY OFFERS SEMINAR ON NEW BUILDING CODE

When: November 29th, 2006 from 9am - 2pm

Where: Southampton County Board Room

The Southampton County Building and Zoning Department will offer a seminar on the new Uniform Statewide Building Code of Virginia, on November 29, 2006. The seminar will be from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Southampton County Board Room. A ten-dollar fee will be charged to cover the code materials and lunch.

On October 1, 2003 the Commonwealth of Virginia adopted completely new Uniform Statewide Building Code of Virginia (USBC). The USBC now uses the International Building Code and International Residential Code as its model codes for buildings and homes in the State.

"We are offering this course because many contractors did not realize there was a major code change," commented Robert Barnett, Building Official and Zoning Administrator, for the County. "Some contractors may think there are only 20 to 30 changes in the new code, where in reality the new codes have hundreds of changes," continued Robert Barnett.

"The new USBC will put Virginia inline with the rest of the nation. The International Codes are design to bring all of the States in the country under one code", reported Lee Copeland, County Building Inspector. "The new International Codes replace the BOCA (Building Officials and Code Administrators) and the CABO (Council of American Building Officials), building codes. Thoses organizations ceased to exist by merging into the new International Code Council."

"Our seminar will cover only the International Residential Code (IRC) because about 95 percent of the permits in the County involve residents", added Copeland. "The IRC incorporates the building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical codes for one and two family homes and will be a lot to cover in a short time."

All participants will be required to register and pay on or before 5:00 PM, November 7, 2003. Registration may be by mail, include check made out to Southampton County Treasurer for $10.00 per person with registration form and mail to Southampton County, PO Box 400, Courtland, VA 23837, or in person at the Building and Zoning Department, 26022 Administration Center Drive, Courtland, VA 23837. For any questions please contact the Building and Zoning Department at (757) 653-3011.

For convenience, a registration form can be downloaded from the Southampton County Website by going to www.southamptoncounty.org/build_zone.asp. Go under the Government Tab to the Building and Zoning web page to find the form.

"There are a limited number of spaces for this seminar so people should get their registration forms in as soon as possible," concluded Barnett.
