is the Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy?
The Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy at Southampton Sheriff's
Office provides citizens an opportunity to learn the practices
and procedures of law enforcement in a secure environment.
Citizens join other like themselves who are interested in
their community and local law enforcement agency.
Goals
of the CLEA:
- Build
a positive relationship between citizen's and Southampton
Sheriff's Office
- Familiarize
citizens with the inner workings of the Sheriff's Office
- Educate
citizens on law enforcement functions
- Provide
citizens an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge from
trained law enforcement officials concerning current and
traditional topics
- Provide
students an opportunity to participate in actual law enforcement
activities
Structure
of the CLEA:
The CLEA is offered once a year each September. Classes
are held one night a week, on Tuesday evenings from 7:00
to 9:30 PM for 9 weeks at the Southampton County Courthouse.

- Patrol
Functions Investigations Communications
- Animal
Control Dive Team RADAR
- DUI
Investigations Jail Operations Court Security
- Firearms/Range
Students
are able to shoot at the firing range, drive an obstacle
course while wearing DUI Goggles, and ride with a deputy
for one shift.
Who
may attend?
A person may attend the Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy
if he or she:
- Lives
in Southampton County or the City of Franklin
- Is
21 years of age or older
- Completes
an application and returns it to the Sheriff's Office,
and the application is accepted

Do I enroll?
Application forms may be obtained by contacting Detective
Wanda Stivers, Coordinator of the CLEA at 653-2100 or by
stopping by the Sheriff's Office.
