Minimum
Qualifications for Deputy Sheriff:
- U.S.
Citizen
- Resident
of Southampton County or the City of Franklin
- High
School Diploma or GED
- Valid
Virginia Drivers License
- No
experience necessary
Application Process
The
first step to the application process is to obtain an
application for appointment from the Southampton Sheriff's
Office. Once the application is completed and returned,
the applicant makes a passing score of at least 60%,
a DMV and Criminal History check will be performed.
Those who pass these checks will then complete a Background
Investigation Questionnaire and an Authorization for
Release of Information Form. At this point, a background
investigation will be performed. This investigation
will include a thorough medical, academic, employment,
and credit check. Based on these findings, qualifying
applicants will be contacted for an interview. Click

Job
Opportunity: Communications Operator Dispatcher
This
office is now accepting applications for Communications
Operator (Dispatcher). The position requires rotating
shift work with 8 hour straight shifts, with changes
in shift on short notice at times. Applicants must be
residents of Southampton County or the City of Franklin.
The following list of qualifications must be met by
applicants:
1. Must be articulate and posses superior communications
skills.
2. Must be able to do the listed tasks under stressful
situations.
3. Must have a thorough knowledge of Southampton County
and its environs.
4. Must be able to read a map.
5. Must be able to follow detailed instructions.
6. Must be able to pass on detailed messages.
7. Must be able to work with a minimum of direct supervision,
while working within a chain-of-command.
8. Must be able to type.
9. Must be able to successfully complete mandated state
training in communications and computer terminal operation.
10. Must be able to operate complex electronic communications.
11. Must be a high school graduate or posses a G.E.D.
12. May not have been convicted of any criminal violation.
13. Prior experience in operating a computer, or in
dispatching is helpful.
