The Victim Witness Assistance Program is located within the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, on Main Street in Courtland, Virginia. The program was instituted by the Commonwealth's Attorney Richard C. Grizzard, in September 1996. The purpose of the program is to reduce the trauma of victimization and encourage crime victims to cooperate with and participate in the criminal justice system by providing direct services including information and assistance required by the Crime Victim and Witness Rights Act. The program provides explanation of complexities of the criminal justice system, referrals for specialized counseling or social services, and information and direction in applying for services available, including benefits from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund.
