Meet the County Administrator
MICHAEL W. JOHNSON, COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR
SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Michael W. Johnson was appointed County Administrator by the Southampton County Board of Supervisors on January 1, 1996. His career in public service has been exclusively in his native home of Southampton County where he began work in 1985. As County Administrator, Mr. Johnson is the chief administrative officer for the county, responsible for a $52.4 million annual operating budget, direction and supervision of all county departments, and the care and custody of more than $65 million of public property and capital assets.
He has directed and managed more than $70 million in capital projects over the course of his career.
Mr. Johnson is a 1982 graduate of Elon College with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, and holds certificates from the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is recognized as a Credentialed Manager by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), and is a member of the Virginia Local Government Management Association (VLGMA), formerly serving on its Executive Committee.
He has represented Southampton County on a number of regional boards and agencies including the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, the Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia (SPSA), the Citizens Advisory Council for the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program, the Western Tidewater Community Services Board, the Western Tidewater Disability Services Board, the Policy Council of the Southeastern Virginia Job Training Administration, the Fifth Judicial District Community Corrections Program, and a variety of steering committees for the Virginia Association of Counties.
Mr. Johnson has been actively involved in community affairs as a member of the Board of Directors for the Franklin-Southampton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Franklin-Southampton Area United Way, the Workforce Development Council at Paul D. Camp Community College, the Southampton Academy Board of Directors and as past president of the Black Creek-Burdette Ruritan Club. He has assisted the American Red Cross for more than two decades in organizing community blood drives and currently volunteers as a reading tutor at Meherrin Elementary School. Mr. Johnson is a Trustee, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Black Creek Baptist Church.
He has been happily married for more than 25 years to his wife, Debbie, also a Southampton County native, and they have two adult children, Ben and Megan. He is an active runner, beginning most days with a run at sunrise along the peaceful countryside of rural Southampton County.
